Aami Pet Insurance 2025: Unbiased Review, Costs & Coverage
Our expert's opinion on Aami
Aami’s pet insurance stands as a comprehensive option for Australian cats and dogs, offering three tiers per species (Silver/Bronze, Gold, Platinum) with 80% reimbursement on eligible vet bills and annual excess choices of $0, $250, or $500 per condition. Compared to leading competitors, Aami provides substantial flexibility in plan structure, especially for multi-tier dental and routine care benefits, while pricing details remain less publicly transparent. Its plans are particularly apt for owners seeking broad accident and illness protection for both young and adult pets, with options for high limits and optional wellness add-ons. AAMI is a long-standing, trusted financial institution with robust backing (part of the Suncorp Group) but no Trustpilot reviews at present for pet insurance; claims are managed via an online portal, and reimbursement times generally align with market standards in Australia. Paperless, digital claims, and online vet features notably simplify management for tech-savvy owners.

AAMI Guarantees
AAMI offers tiered pet insurance for cats and dogs, with three plans for each: Silver/Bronze, Gold, and Platinum, all covering both accident and illness, with a set reimbursement rate of up to 80% of eligible vet bills and an excess choice per condition ($0, $250, or $500).
Platinum plans stand out by automatically including dental illness cover—otherwise, it’s only optional—and all levels allow an optional routine care package, but preventive treatments remain uncovered unless that package is chosen.
AAMI’s strengths include flexible excess options, annual sub-limits that support affordable premium control, quick access to online claims and vet teleconsults (through myPetPass™), and the availability of emergency boarding and a broad, detailed list of covered treatments.
However, all plans exclude pre-existing conditions, most preventive/wellness care unless extra is paid for, and have strict limitations on alternative therapies, breeding, and behavioural conditions; elective procedures are also excluded, and there is no cover for animals other than dogs and cats.
Overall, AAMI’s offering is strong for accident/illness support with some optional flexibility, but falls short in routine and comprehensive wellness unless specifically added, and does not publish pricing up-front (N.C.).

myPetPass™ Important Information
Good to know: myPetPass™ is available for online vet support and discounts but is not an insurance benefit; the annual reimbursement and sub-limit amounts depend on the Certificate of Insurance (N.C.); routine care and dental illness require optional add-ons unless on Platinum; all plans cover only dogs or cats, not exotic pets; claims can be made online via the Pet Portal; waiting periods apply, and certain item limits may impact reimbursement eligibility.
AAMI Exclusions
AAMI pet insurance exclusions are generally consistent with the Australian market, notably excluding pre-existing conditions—especially chronic illnesses diagnosed before cover, and those presenting during any waiting period.
Dental illnesses are only covered if the Dental Illness Benefit is specifically added or included, highlighting a constraint compared to some rivals that may include basic dental by default.
Cosmetic procedures, elective surgeries such as declawing or ear cropping, breeding and pregnancy-related costs, as well as behavioural conditions and experimental treatments, are excluded.
Day-to-day care (including grooming, food, and supplements), as well as injuries linked to organised fighting or hunting, and any claims resulting from neglect or failure to protect the pet are not covered.
There are also geographic and regulatory exclusions, such as treatments for infectious diseases under government biosecurity declaration and medications not approved by the APVMA.

AAMI Prices
Aami sits in the mid-range of the Australian pet insurance market, offering cover that balances broad inclusions with reasonable premiums.
Its policies deliver up to 80% reimbursement on eligible vet bills, but the standard benefit cap, optional dental, and routine care extras mean coverage is solid without stretching into ultra-premium territory.
Excess options ($0, $250, $500) add flexibility, and inclusions such as online vet care (myPetPass™) help keep fee structures clear and operational costs moderate.
Aami's fully digital approach streamlines claims and policy management, supporting lower rates compared to more traditional insurers with similar coverage levels.
Overall, Aami is competitively positioned and offers good value for pet owners seeking strong coverage without the highest premiums or comprehensive luxury features.

What reimbursement amount can I expect from Aami?
AAMI reimburses up to 80% of eligible veterinary costs for your dog or cat under the Platinum plan. After you pay a selected excess (for example, $250 per condition), AAMI covers the rest—up to your annual policy limits. Here are some realistic examples to help you see the difference pet insurance can make for your companion and your wallet:
Treatment for canine gastroenteritis
Total vet costs: $1,200 (emergency consult, diagnostics, hospitalisation, medication)
Excess paid (per condition): $250 (selected for this example)
Eligible costs after excess: $1,200 – $250 = $950
Reimbursement with Platinum Plan (80%): $950 × 80% = $760
👉 You receive $760 back from AAMI. Your out-of-pocket cost is $440.
ℹ️ The $250 excess only applies once for this condition during the policy year. A high annual limit ensures continued cover if further treatment is needed.
Cruciate Ligament Surgery for a Cat - AAMI Platinum Plan Example
Total vet costs: $2,800 (orthopaedic surgery, anaesthetic, aftercare)
Excess paid (per condition): $250 (assumed not yet used for this condition/year)
Eligible costs after excess: $2,800 – $250 = $2,550
Reimbursement with Platinum Plan (80%): $2,550 × 80% = $2,040
👉 You receive $2,040 from AAMI. Your out-of-pocket cost: $760.
ℹ️ This major operation is well covered under the Platinum plan—providing real financial relief for expensive, unexpected injuries.
Preventive care – annual teeth cleaning (routine care option)
Total vet costs: $350 (general anaesthetic, dental scale and polish)
Routine care benefit (Platinum plan): Up to $100 per year for routine dental treatment, paid as a set benefit.
👉 You receive $100 back from AAMI. Your out-of-pocket cost: $250.
ℹ️ The routine care benefit is a fixed reimbursement, regardless of total cost, and does not reduce your limits for illness or accident cover.
Aami Assistance
Aami’s assistance for pet owners includes access to online veterinary consultations via myPetPass™, which can be valuable for quick advice and ongoing care.
Pre-approval for treatment and claim assistance is available through the online Pet Portal, supporting policyholders in managing vet costs and paperwork, though there is no specific mention of advance payment schemes that would remove upfront financial barriers.
A dedicated customer portal supports live vet support, digital claims, and policy management, but no mobile app is offered, which may limit usability for tech-savvy pet owners.
While emergency pet boarding is covered under qualifying circumstances, there is no evidence of a 24/7 emergency vet line, teleconsultation service beyond standard hours, or a structured network of partner clinics.
Additionally, coverage abroad—including duration and extent—is not communicated, which may concern those seeking insurance for travel outside Australia.
