Potiki, underwritten by petinsurance.com.au, offers two main pet insurance plans—Gold Cover and Platinum Cover—designed for Australian pet owners seeking broad protection for accidental injury and illness, with plan differences focused on dental and routine care options.
Both plans typically reimburse 80% of eligible vet bills, with annual limits and deductibles individually specified on each policy certificate, providing flexibility but lacking published benefit caps for direct comparison. Potiki’s standing in the market sits in line with major digital-first providers, with particular strengths in opt-in dental, short waiting periods, and optional routine care; actual pricing details and annual limits are undisclosed, making pricing transparency average rather than standout.
Potiki is especially suited for cats and dogs with no prior health issues, owners seeking standard to high reimbursements, and those interested in quick digital claims, including access to 24/7 VetChat and paperless processing.
The insurer, petinsurance.com.au (Petsure), is one of Australia’s largest and most financially stable pet insurers, though Potiki itself shows little review volume; Trustpilot displays a 3.7/5 from 1 review as of March 2022, and average claim reimbursement times are competitive in the industry, especially when using GapOnly® at partnered clinics.

  • Comprehensive accident and illness cover both plans
  • Optional dental and routine care add-ons
  • 80% claim reimbursement typical
  • Fast gap-only claim processing available
  • Covers hereditary and chronic conditions (if not pre-existing)
  • No waiting period for accidental injury
  • Access to 24/7 VetChat non-insurance perk
  • Annual limits and pricing not publicly specified
  • Little independent customer feedback to date
  • Extensive exclusions, especially for dental and alternative therapies
  • Pre-existing and chronic conditions never covered
  • No wellness budget built into base plans

The Guarantees Potiki

Potiki offers two comprehensive plans—Gold Cover and Platinum Cover—both providing strong protection against specified accidents and a wide range of illnesses, with optional or included dental benefits distinguishing the tiers.
Both plans support flexible excess and annual limit settings, typically reimbursing 80% of eligible vet fees and applying sub-limits to special benefits such as dental care and emergency boarding.

Access to any registered vet in Australia, pre-claim treatment approvals, and 24/7 VetChat as a non-insurance perk are strong points, while the absence of coverage for alternative therapies, overseas treatment, and the separation of routine care as an optional, non-insurance benefit may disappoint some pet owners.

A key advantage for Platinum is the inclusion of dental illness cover; however, both plans exclude general dental cleaning, elective and cosmetic procedures, and chronic pre-existing conditions.
Annual coverage and waiting periods are average for the Australian market, but details on the precise annual benefit caps can be unclear without the certificate.

Potiki Prices

Potiki’s pricing falls squarely in the mid-range segment for Australian pet insurance, reflecting a balanced value proposition between premium and cost.
The plans are designed to be competitive, offering broad illness and accident cover with 80% reimbursement rates and customisable excess settings, while avoiding high-cost premium positioning.

Dental cover as an optional or included benefit for higher plans, plus access to digital features such as 24/7 VetChat and easy claim processing, support strong value for money compared to traditional providers.

However, limitations in cover for alternative therapies and complex dental procedures mean Potiki maintains affordability without being a “budget” offer.

FAQ

Do I have to pay upfront for veterinary fees with Potiki?

Potiki does not offer an advance payment or third-party payment service by default. Policyholders are generally required to pay the vet upfront and then submit a claim for reimbursement through the secure Pet Portal or at participating GapOnly® clinics. GapOnly® allows eligible clinics to claim on your behalf so you only pay the gap at the time of treatment. However, you should always check in advance if your vet participates in GapOnly® or direct settlement.

How do I cancel my pet insurance policy with Potiki?

To cancel your Potiki policy, you need to submit a written request containing your policy number via email to [email protected] or call 1300 855 663 during business hours. No mandatory notice period is specified in the PDS, but it is best to provide as much notice as possible. For the request, be sure to provide clear identification of the policyholder and policy number.

Which vets can I use with Potiki pet insurance?

You can visit any registered veterinarian in Australia for eligible treatment under your Potiki policy. There is no requirement to use specific partner vets. Claims will be considered as long as the vet is registered and the condition is covered.

What is covered under Potiki’s Gold and Platinum plans?

Routine care is an optional non-insurance benefit. For details on specific annual limits and benefit percentages, refer to your Certificate of Insurance.

How do I make a claim, and what documents are required?

Claims can be made online through the secure Pet Portal or by asking your vet to lodge a GapOnly® claim if available. You will need your policy number, a completed claim form, and invoices or receipts from the vet for eligible treatment. Claims are usually processed via EFT once approved. For assistance, customer service is available by phone and email during business hours.
